Not good initial experience: starts with the colonial UK flag which is not a symbol for languages, site doesn’t quite work without JS so no menu access (popover works without JS), puts proprietary services Microsoft GitHub & Reddit in priority position, using VC funding leads to hesitation, no mention in the FAQs or otherwise how to contribute to the code (not for general users sure, but missing entirely).

One of my longer-term goals is to integrate Mumble on XMPP (others have thought about this too) since its chat is pretty shit & needing accounts to join isn’t great but or two good foundational protocols.

XMPP is better for modularity which is why everything is at extension with means the foundations are simple & easy to implement where you can build something optimized & bespoke on it like Fornite’s coms or Nintendo’s presense. It’s a little harder to understand tho since out of the box you get almost nothing—but the big servers intended for chat like Prosody & ejabberd have sane defaults.

The centralization you are referring to seems more a client issue since the protocol & servers already ‘do the things’ but it sounds like you want a single ‘app’. For community building where you consider group calls less common, both Movim & Libervia offer more than Element (note the other Matrix clients are lacking feature parity) since they both can do integrated posts like forums—where Libervia supports calendars/events too. There’s no reason a client couldn’t exist with Jitsi or Mumble integration.

Ultimately use the right tool for you—it’s just nice to dispel myths that Matrix has some special sauce or that predecessors can’t fill the same roles (while also using less resources in all directions).

What a waste. You can buy a lot of indulgences with that.

You review the ideas & code at a high level. I feel like you didn’t read the “nit” part. Instead I get review for my flyby patch (no plans to be a mainstay) where the idea is fine, but the maintainer wants me to worry about variable names, spacing, & other BS that doesn’t matter. You get a ton of “please add space here” type comments & the maintainer is putting the onus on you to fix their quirks which leads to a really slow review process full of irrelevant nitpicks. A maintainer should just merge that code & fix the nits themselves rather than expecting everyone to care about their naming conventions. Pull request model in an MS GitHub-like UI encourages this behavior.

We can start it up again. Time to nudge in the next Lemmy AMA to allow XMPP addresses alongside Matrix. You’d be surprised how little things like that can nudge adoption & pique curiosity.

You’d get more battery & performance out of AMD, but the X1 is Intel. Looks like they don’t even offer OLED on that line either.

And certain projects I don’t deem it worth my time to contribute due to this fact. The unfortunate issue with that is usually there isn’t a good way to communicate that to the maintainers when they lock all coms to Microsoft GitHub & Slack/Discord. There are certain projects I have skipped on trying based on this too as to me it becomes an indicator of poor decision-making trying to capture hype/marketing rather than fostering goodwill of the free/ethical software movements. At least on Lemmy you get an upvote instead of harassed by asking for an open communication and/or contribution option 😅

I would like “live” tabs to show previous stream… sometimes search can find it by looking at a channel name, but not always
