What does indexing have to do with actually getting to own your data & not participating in corporate-owned social media? If you want to straight hide it all, you would never post it to the internet. Most of us sought the refuge of Lemmy to avoid these platforms & know our post aren’t harvested to profit for a Lemmy IPO.

Recruiters can find you regardless, but also are not very useful for getting a job versus having a network & the cut they take means you get the shaft if hired thru them too. A platform like LinkedIn is drivel that will absolutely rot your mind so it should be an easy skip.

IIRC it might be on by default (tho this would hurt anonymity if you can request JXL files & stock Fx cannot), else open about:config & search for “jxl”. Upstream has kept this flag—toggle on or off—only working in Fx Nightly.

SSDs* HDDs*

f2fs does one of the weirdest things with compression by default: the files are compressed but they still take up the same amount of blocks as the uncompressed files. This can get you the slight performance boost of compressed files, but doesn’t actually save you space which is an odd choice. You can enable a flag in the kernel but it has other effects as well.

I think a lot of the arguments in this thread are pointing out that for info worthy of holding onto, you should probably be using forums. Part of the Discord issues is using it to hold onto permanent info (which requires an account to try to search). If you keep chat with the idea that it should be ephemeral in, then migrating isn’t an issue. The folks that mean for their IRC rooms to be longer lived, have public logs in HTML to search & those that didn’t, well they didn’t care that that history was lost since it was never meant to live forever. Without IRCv3 there isn’t even the concept of history (which has usability consequences needing a bouncer or an always-on remote terminal), but for instance with XMPP many rooms just give you the last n number of messages which is enough to understand the current conversation to participate, not read the entire log since room inception.

Most of Discord’s user base doesn’t make software. IRC is just suggested as the bare minimum (v3 having more features, but not widely adopted). There are still other avenues like XMPP that offer roughly equivalent features, or if you like blowing consuming a lot of resources on user machine & risking centralization, Matrix.org is hosting free servers for chat & are slowly rolling out important features like open governance. Either of these options should in theory allow a user to create just one account & join any community with said account.

IRCv3 has a lot of features & is good, but if you need encrypted chat and/or want to support decentralization XMPP MUCs can fit the bill similar being just a bit less lightweight.

There’s still been a time & place for realtime communications where the history preservation doesn’t quite matter… it can be some general recon of a problem to know what to even ask so as to not clog up the signal-noise for SEO or even if it’s mostly off-topic banter to relate to community members.

Exactly. You should consider it too… at a bare minimum have a bridge. If you are a small project that doesn’t have the funds Libera.chat & OFTC exist to be used for this exact purpose.

That server is under the Matrix.org fleet. It’s like saying Edge isn’t Chrome.

[-] toastal@lemmy.ml 2 points 7 months ago

The did, but Matrix is coming to reinvent that while but by wasting resources trying to duplicate the state of everything at massive storage costs & without the extensibility because JSON.

Everything has to be new & shiny or it’s bad. XML bad, JSON good. /s
