The Israeli military is arming gangs to combat Hamas in Gaza, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Thursday. The revelation comes to light after right-wing Israeli lawmaker Avigdor Lieberman accused Netanyahu on Israeli public broadcaster Kan yesterday of arming a gang of hundreds of men in Rafah as a counterweight to Hamas influence in the Strip. The Prime Minister’s office responded by saying that it was combating the Palestinian resistance group “in various ways, on the recommendation of all heads of the security establishment.”

Later, Netanyahu officially confirmed the reports in a video posted on X. “On the advice of security officials, we activated clans in Gaza that oppose Hamas,” the Israeli Prime Minister said. “What’s wrong with that? It only saves the lives of Israeli soldiers.”

Among these groups is an armed gang led by a man named Yasser Abu Shabab, a thief and drug trafficker from Rafah who led groups of hundreds of armed men in looting aid convoys during the latter half of 2024. Descended from the influential Bedouin Tarabin clan, which spans southern Gaza, the Sinai, and the Naqab Desert, Abu Shabab has been described by Israeli media outlets as “linked to ISIS,” likely due to Abu Shabab’s involvement in drug trafficking networks between Gaza and the Sinai in which ISIS has been implicated.

This policy comes in the wake of a systematic Israeli campaign of assassinating the Hamas government’s civil servants to cause social collapse in Gaza and foment chaos and lawlessness in the Strip. The Israeli army has been deliberately targeting Interior Ministry bureaucrats, the police force, and the security services to create a vacuum that is then filled by armed looters like Abu Shabab’s group, as recently reported by Mondoweiss.

Qassam Brigades, the military wing of Hamas, announced that its fighters killed two 'Israeli' soldiers at point-blank range last Tuesday on Al-Nazzaz Street, east of the Shuja'iya neighborhood in Gaza City.

The group said the soldiers were targeted after returning from the front lines.

In a separate development, Al-Qassam stated that on Saturday, its fighters struck an 'Israeli' D9 military bulldozer with a “Yassin 105” shell near the Yarmouk site in the Al-Manara neighborhood, south of Khan Younis in southern Gaza.

The University of Melbourne, one of Australia’s most prestigious universities, has expelled two students and suspended two others for their involvement in pro-Palestinian protests on campus.

The decision marks a further shift to outlaw political free speech on the campuses and more broadly and must be opposed by students, staff and all those who defend basic democratic rights. It comes amid a deepening offensive spearheaded by the federal Labor government of Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to outlaw opposition to Israel’s genocidal assault on the Palestinian people which Australian imperialism, along with the major powers in North America and Europe, has supported for the last year and a half.

... Over recent years, India has become Israel’s most dependable buyer. Between 2001 and 2021, India imported $4.2 billion worth of Israeli arms.

India’s support for Israel has also grown during the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

In May 2024, Spain denied docking rights to the Marianne Danica ship carrying 27 tonnes of explosives bound for Haifa, a port city in Israel. The cargo had originated in Chennai, India.

The incident underlined India’s role not just as a buyer but also as a supplier of arms.

Companies such as Adani-Elbit Advanced Systems India (a joint Israeli-Indian venture), Premier Explosives and the state-owned Munitions India have emerged as key actors in this trade. During Israel’s genocide in Gaza, fragments of a missile marked “Made in India” were found in the ruins of a bombed UN shelter in the Nuseirat refugee camp.

This arms flow has become crucial for Israel. With some European countries facing growing public pressure to suspend military support to Israel, India has emerged as a stable, less scrutinized partner.

Israel, in turn, has maintained a steady supply of arms exports to India during this period. This is noteworthy, as arms shipments to other parties have faced delays...

UK firm RCV Engines has officially cancelled its agreement with Israel for the supply of drone engines, after the deal and the use of the drones to attack civilians in Gaza was exposed by Declassified UK in April.

A Declassified UK investigation exposed the company’s involvement in supplying the engines for the ‘APUS 25’ “long-endurance TactiQuad” drone manufactured by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) for use by the occupation against the people of Gaza.
