This game is tough as nails. I love it dearly and hate it with a passion.

The cars are rendered full 3d,while the tracks are all FMV. You can, and should, use all weapons you can get your hands on to win.

Lance Boyle, the host in the game, is lovably ridiculous and his assistent is there to be ditzy. But this game will make you hate the video when you lose.

It's not the best game, but considering he was a teen when he made this, still an impressive feat.

Later on he made the Build engine after seeing Doom and saying to himself: "I can make that". This was notable enough that John Carmack, inhuman programmer of id software, gave him a call to ask how he achieved looking up and down in the build engine.

These games were always on the top of my lists to install on a fresh DOS install.

Great games with true fps 6 degrees of freedom.

In my childhood, during computer lessons in school, we played a game which I don't remember the name. It was a guy with a jetpack that goes forward over different stages. Any clues?

It has everything you want from the 90s: Blood, gore, lots of weapons and smooth gameplay. Except music. They didn't do music.

Lemmings went 3d. It's not the best way to play this classic game due to the clunky controls and camera, but it's still fun once you get past that. The controls just give lemmings 3d an extra difficulty.

Need for speed SE improved on an already impressive game and made the first steps at becoming the well known franchise it is today.

This game has eaten away many hours of my life. A cute little dinosaur needs to go to the exit for 100 levels.

Truth: DOS has been multitasking since the early 1980s.

We all love our "Doom"," Command & Conquer", "Commander Keen" etc.

But what is a game that you love that no one seems to know and/or like? What is that one gem that makes you type your "C:>cd games" just that little tiny bit faster?

I'll go first. My pick is Normality from 1996 by Gremlin Interactive. A 3D first person point and click adventure with FMV Cutscenes. It's goofy and weird but perfectly playable. I highly recommended anyone who loves point and click adventures to try this one out. It's basically Doom Point 'n Click

This game is amazing, and makes you feel like you're actually in the original Star Trek series.

This is actually the sequel to Star Trek: 25th Anniversary. And is using the same engine.

I actually never really knew what to do because you need the manual for this game, and my manual was in black and white, so I couldn't read the star systems. Mind you, this was an official release.

These days the color manuals are more easy to find thanks to the internet. And I finally got to play it.

It was ahead of its time. You can do quests and talk to people. It has multiple endings. There's voice acting. It's overall a very immersive game for its time. It is also the last commercial standalone game on the Doom engine.

And for the modern computers, you can get the veteran edition on gog and steam.

It's fun, though dated. All vehicles handle differently. It's not the worst game out there if you can look past the graphics and "edgy" presentation.

This game is a thoroughly enjoyable experience from start to finish. What if you cross a racing game with a flight combat game and make it arcady as hell? Slipstream 5000.

This game is dumb, fun and has more blood than most DOS games.

Original post by @Dogwalker@beehaw.org

I recently played The Dig for the first time, which passed me by when I was younger. I had heard of it I didn’t realise it was another Lucas/Spielberg game. I’d just come off a couple of other Lucasarts games and it was quite different.

Looking back it seems quite divisive, I think because it was so different to the comedy Lucasarts adventures, but there’s still a lot of love for it floating around the internet, and now I’ve added to it here if you fancy a long read: https://p7uen.neocities.org/posts/2023-06-23-The-Dig

It includes features like:

  • Mod Support with some extras using Lua
  • OpenGL Acceleration
  • SDL 2.0 Support
  • New graphical effects
  • Multiplayer Support (Up to four players)
  • High Quality Packs which make the game look better, provide better sounds and even music you might never have known existed in the original games
  • In-game Menu for Vorticons Keen as well as a new HUD
  • Named save slots
  • Unrestricted Joystick Support

and much more

It was way ahead of its time. Having sloped floors, catwalks, transparant textures and moving platforms while still being limited by 90 degree walls. A mouse based shooting with the crosshair moving across the screen and using that same crosshair for your HUD and picking up items. (not unlike what system shock did)

And above all, it's a lot of fun!
