Well, here it is!

A few days ago, I made a post appealing for information relating to animal product usage in the music instrument industry. Historically, musical instruments have used animal products. Typically, drumheads were made of animal skin, piano keys of ivory, and violin bows of horsehair. A lot of these processes have been phased out (most drums use Mylar for their skins now, and ivory was banned for pianos in the 80s.)

Here are some patterns I've noticed while creating this sheet:

  1. Drums and harmonicas are the "most vegan" instruments
  2. Acoustic pianos are much more likely to use wool than electric pianos
  3. The violin industry is the worst for animal products. Most violin manufacturers still use bows with horsehair.
  4. Manufacturers specialising in introductory/student products, such as Sigma and Franz Hoffmann, tend to use animal-derived materials rather than synthetic ones.
  5. Actual saxophones are vegan, but a lot of manufacturers use genuine leather straps. All companies that use leather for their straps have been labelled as orange. Trumpets, flugel horns, tubas, and trombones are seemingly okay regardless of manufacturer. Some flutes used to use ivory but again, this practice was banned in 1989.
  6. I discovered that clarinets tend to use goat skin for their pads. Unfortunately, I could not find any information on exactly which companies use animal skin for their clarinets. Sorry.

Another thing I've noticed is that information relating to this topic is EXTREMELY muddy. I would often find a source claiming that a manufacturer did not use animal products only to double check their information pages and see that they use wool. I would find sources claiming a manufacturer isn't vegan only to check their information pages and see that they seemingly use no animal products. For this reason, I cannot guarantee that the information in the spreadsheet is 100% accurate, but this is the closest to accuracy I have been able to get to.

This sheet compiles the top manufacturers in each category of instrument. If anyone has any other manufacturers they'd like me to investigate, please just say so in the comments.

I was lucky enough to come across this recipe which provides me with a scrumptious and nutritious meal. I thought I'd share it with the wider vegan community. In terms of flavour and texture, it's up there with more traditional tacos. Please enjoy and if you make them, let us know how you found them.

The data on this page was obtained from the USDA NASS Quickstats Database. The cattle slaughter numbers include bulls, heifers, steers, and dairy cows. Calves are counted separately and amounted to about 315,900 deaths in 2023.

I'm looking for a vegan sandwich protein recipe that is more of a whole food than the highly processed food that is often found in stores. So far, I'm going to try out lentil patties. I figure I can freeze a batch and stick them in the air fryer as needed. Any other ideas?

Introducing to the Vegan Theory Club Lemmy!

This is a link sharing site for vegan things. We have open registration if you want to create an account and log in.

We host four communities which are like "subreddits"

  1. Vegan Home Cooks
  2. Vegan Recipes
  3. Gardening
  4. Vegan

The communities are here to help share links and photos for vegans by vegans.

!homecooks@vegantheoryclub.org is a site for a discord server called Vegan Home Cooks Discord. This is a low-friction post-what-you-cooked community so we can share what we made today and talk about it, no recipes required. We want to provide motivation and encouragement for each other and show off what we made today.

!recipes@vegantheoryclub.org is focused on how to cook and links to recipe sites.

!gardening@vegantheoryclub.org is focused on our gardens, plants, hydroponics and learning how to do it. Some of us are pros and some are just learning and want to post what we're reading and what we're doing.

!vegan@vegantheoryclub.org is for general vegan news, I don't really know what to do with this one.

If these don't show up on your home instance please search for them on your instance to subscribe and federate the posts for everyone on your insance!

Leather has been seen as an unshakeable and prominent aspect of the fashion industry for millennia. The oldest intact leather shoe is over 5,500 years old, pre-dating the Pyramids of Giza by 1,000 years. But it's time for us to move forward.

Today, over 1.4 billion cattle have been bred and stand on once biodiverse land until they are slaughtered. Leather is now largely tanned with harsh carcinogenic chemicals, and destructive leather supply chains harmfully implicate workers, destroy critical habitat and pollute waterways with toxic chemicals.

Read our report series to understand these intertwined harms, and how we can move beyond them. When we work together, we have the power to transform fashion – and we have a responsibility to use this power for good.

Hello folks! First, I’d like to clarify that, even as a bloodmouth, I fully understand why some people have moral objections to eating meat. I am simply here to ask about it, as someone who is not a vegan.

So I suppose I have a few questions for anyone who wants to answer them, 100% as your own opinions and feelings about the topic.

Why do you make the conscious decision to not eat meat/animal products? Do you have negative feelings towards those who raise their own animals for food, such as those who raise chickens for eggs or cattle for milk, and otherwise treat the animals ethically? Are there other reasons for not eating meat that I’m not considering? When did you choose to switch to a vegan lifestyle, what (if any) was the “catalyst”? What are some challenges that you have dealt with when it comes to this lifestyle? Why do you believe there is a continued stigma around veganism in many physical/internet communities?

I understand that as someone who isn’t vegan, this is not my space, and I am trying to be as respectful as possible while here. If I have said anything objectionable within my questions or otherwise, please let me know so I can avoid making the mistake in the future.

EDIT: Holy crap, thank you all for the responses! I appreciate y’all for taking the time out of your day to respond and share your knowledge. I’m going to go watch Dominion within the next few days since some of you mentioned that.

At a hospital again. I woke up to stinky meat next to me. They told me they don't have vegan food. They're very ostensibly rude about this. Had to listen to a long tirade from the room"mate" about how carnism is natural.

I'm in a lot of pain which makes me really irritable. I really didn't need to be made to gag with the meat.

Last time I was in a hospital they would throw meat into my food as well making sure it touched everything so I wasn't able to eat the veggies without the corpse taste.

I don't get why people are so malicious about it. I'm trying not to cry not to give them satisfaction. I am vegan for moral reasons. This is extremely uncomfortable.

I had cheese put into my food before, but now I was given meat-meat and not only once but twice (different places).

It wasn't even by people not understanding what veganism is, it was just a very blatant swap.

Sure, I got money back, but I'm wondering: has the acceptance of vegans gone down and malice towards us gone up? I would've thought it would've gotten better over time.

I'm asking because I'm so far removed from the vegan community I forget I'm vegan because the store being "empty" for me is the norm, as is checking labels etc; I've no clue whether other vegans are facing similar issues as of late.
