I'm not sure what you're asking here.

Within the realm of computing any media we use today are a collection of bits. We use tools like web browsers to render many of those collections, text, image, sound, video, and pdf are all covered by current web browsers.

Other collections like documents and spreadsheets are rendered by their respective applications.

The fediverse only needs to support links to those for a functional experience.

What do you mean?

Damn now I want federated spreadsheets

That sounds terrifyingly interesting.

A bit like CryptPad?

Browsing those content types needs to be an enjoyable experience as well. Mastodon is best used for short text, Pixelfed is good for pictures, Lemmy is for forums/sometimes images and videos. Peertube is an actual video first platform.

Spreadsheets and PDFs could be shared over Mastodon, just like they could be over Xitter. But that doesn't make it a PDF based platform, or a federated spreadsheet editor. Which seems to be the thing the OP is asking for. A type of media that should be the main focus of a (Fediverse) social media platform.

I wasn't sure what OP was asking, which is why I asked.
