I don't know anything about manga. Is it really that expensive?
Sorta. Each book is about $10-15, which isn't a lot by itself. But A full series can be dozens of volumes which quickly adds up. And you can consume it at a pretty rapid pace.
Back in my day we paid $30 each for VHS Anime, you had to choose Duns or Subs ad it would be like 2 episodes of a 500 episode series.
So, it could be worse.
That's why I used to only buy omnibuses. Though it's pretty hard to find those these days
