It involves removing a patient's tooth, usually the canine, installing a plastic optical lens inside it, and then implanting the whole thing into the eye.

TL;DR:

Remove tooth
Shave down to a rectangle
Install plastic lens
Remove scar tissue from eye and replace it with cheek tissue
Implant the lens-tooth into the cheek so new cheek tissue will grow around it

Later they go back to remove the lens-tooth from the cheek and sew it into the front of the eye but behind the cheek tissue (theres a view port to see through).

Wild.

I recommend going to see the image in the article. It's not grotesque but very odd.
