Recent advances is water battle technology include a device, essentially a loose sponge wrapped in lycra, which can be lobbed at one's opponent. Then it can be 'recharged' by squeezing is submerged in a bucket of water; several of these refill buckets can be placed around the battle area. Their re-charge capacity makes them superior to single use water balloons.

Also less mess to clean up. Plus, you can use your enemy's weapon. My mom hated cleaning up bits of balloon from the yard, so she gave up straight up kitchen sponges to lob at each other. It was very fun, I'd love to use the purpose made ones kids have nowadays
