MODERATORS
Why is turn-based so popular? I understand everyone has different preferences, but the headline makes it sound like the author wants all games to be turn-based.
It's one reason why I don't like 4x games, tactical RPGs, and even Pokemon. I'd much rather have real-time combat and all the difficulties that presents.
There are a lot of people who want the challenge and skill expression of a game decoupled from reaction time.
Turn-based games are incredible when you frequently have to pause. When it's slow at work I'll occasionally play a turn-based game (Cobalt Core most recently) because I can walk away any time if I get a call. It also makes me feel so bad when I'm playing an unpausable game and my dog waddles up looking for attention. Not a parent myself but my dad friends had to put real time games down for awhile when their kids were born.
I personally enjoy real time or real time with pause more than turn based. Some turn based games are great but turn based games frequently feel like converted boardgames.
But I like boardgames. Turn based games are like a really complex boardgame with all the admin handled for you.
Oh yeah don't get me wrong, I also love some turn based games. Cataclysm and shadow empire are two that I've been playing recently. It's just that as a different medium you don't have to be constrained to boardgame restrictions and I prefer a lot of games that don't use traditional turns
