It's always been a not even thinly veiled CIA front and it's prime comedy that the thing was axed by the Trump administration of all people. Probably because occasionally they actually do good things, in particular they had their hand in ending Apartheid in South Africa which Musk of course hates them for.
Still was funny to see how the US left went from "USAID evil" to "but won't someone think of the starving kids". That's generally UN programmes, not USAID.
That honestly makes a lot more sense than it should.
