Pope Leo XIV on Monday called for the release of imprisoned journalists and affirmed the “precious gift of free speech and the press” in an audience with some of the 6,000 journalists who descended on Rome to cover his election as the first American pontiff.

Judging by his track record I think he will largely continue Francis’ legacy. Perhaps a bit more conservative than Francis, but I’ve found his statements encouraging for the most part. He’s criticized both JD and Trump in the past, and he seems to be focusing on the more positive Christian teachings like caring for the poor rather than the fire and brimstone wing
