Republicans are conservative. The progressive wing of the Democratic Party is too far to the left. Democrats must move toward the center in order to attract more voters. Note the centrist candidate in Romania just won.

In the 2024 presidential election, there was no centrist candidate. Trump was to the right and Harris to the left.
