MODERATORS
The USSR really hit it out of the park with the Salyut design. Big enough to be practical for human habitation, small enough to launch on relatively low cost rockets, and modular enough to be used for a wide variety of purposes. Even the current Chinese space station's modules are basically Salyut variants.
