I've been running Immich for a while, which aims to replace Google Photos. The interface is very nice and polished, and development is very active. It's still considered "beta" with the occasional breaking change, but it has been fun to keep it running. Of course in order to feel really confident running something like this for your precious photos, a solid backup strategy is a must, so keep that in mind if you decide to look into it.
We have a 2.5 year old, of whom we have thousands of pictures. We had a Nixplay photo frame which used to sync a Google Photos album and worked well, but corporate greed has turned it into e-waste with recent changes in their subscription model.
So, I turned a Rasperry Pi and an old computer monitor into an even better photo frame using software called ImmichFrame. It's pretty slick! I'm hoping it's stable enough to maybe set up at the grandparents house eventually.
The fact that it displays photos from Immich, and not Google, just tickles me. I love it.
The only thing left to make Immich a total replacement for us is phone notifications. I want my parents to get notified when we add new pictures to the shared album, and the latest release hinted at that functionality being in the works... I'm pretty pumped to see where it goes.
I know my sister and brother both have subscriptions to things like iCloud and Google in order to keep all of their photos and videos on those services, so I wonder if they'd trust me to be their "cloud", with virtually unlimited storage, for free. Probably not, but maybe one day. And honestly, but the time I pay for off-site backup, it probably costs me about the same as it costs them to use iCloud and the like.
