I think keeping the charm of 2d sprites within a world that feels 3d has been done very well, it feels really ambitious for a fan project but definetly has a lot of potential.

Not sure if it's the case here, but these are tons of work and inspired fans may donate or offer resources to assist with the process. Can't really be mad at them for wanting that possibility

And the second you get money for that kind of work then you're fucked, you're profiting of someone else's copyright and trademark
