Documenting hate speech, conspiracy theories, apologia/revisionism, and general tankie behaviour across the fediverse. Memes are welcome!
What is a Tankie?
Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.
(caution of biased source)
Basic Rules:
Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.
Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.
Apologia — (Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.
Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.
Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.
Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.
You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.
Yes, unfortunately, some of the largest communities are still there because .ml is the home instance of the Lemmy developers. That's a real problem.
Recently, one of the mods there deleted two comments I made out of the blue – I had simply said that, in my opinion, there can be no justification for terrorism against civilians (I don't see what's wrong with that). I already knew this, but it made it clear to me how absurdly intolerant these people are – at .ml, open discourse is actively prevented and that is unacceptable to me.
As a result, I have stopped my financial support for Lemmy development – despite FOSS, I simply cannot support people whose stated goal is apparently to replace one propaganda machine with another. That is the opposite of what is important to me.
My financial contribution will now go to other projects. I'm very sorry as support for the software development is of course important, but I simply can't trust people who approve of such a restrictive approach to social media.
Same. I donated when that post was pinned, and regreted my decision like 2 days later lol
With slrpnk potentially migrating to PieFed, and other instances like blahaj opening up a PieFed version, we might get to see another user migration.
By subscriber count, but comm subscriber count is, essentially, worthless. .ml memes has something like 51K subscribers, Lemmy has something like 54K TOTAL monthly active users. There's no way nearly every single MAU is subbed to .ml memes LMAO
And indeed if you look at meme comms on https://lemmyverse.net/communities?order=active_month .ml memes, last I checked was somewhere around #40 (I'm not sure why it's not appearing at all today, maybe it's traffic tankies so hard it fell off the chart completely lmao)
The only remaining big ones, by MAUs, are Linux and Privacy, both of which are going to be toppled by !linux@programming.dev and !privacy@lemmy.dbzer0.com sooner or later.
The time for calling for defederation is now, whatever is left isn't worth the damage they are doing
Sad but true. I see it the same way: .ml seems to me to cause a lot of harm. The arbitrary censorship there - imo there's no other way to describe it - is damaging the reputation of the Fediverse as an open approach to social media, which is why I think it's indeed time for decent instances to defederate.
I mean, especially for new users who are unfamiliar with the decentralized nature of the Fediverse, it's an unpleasant experience when they post something completely legitimate in one of the (seemingly) large .ml comms and then get censored by one of their deluded mods.
This can easily give the completely wrong impression that Lemmy would be something like Truth Social just on the other side of the political spectrum, which .ml actually is – and in my opinion, this needs to be prevented at all costs.
