I forget who but someone hypothesized that the entire AI boom was being pumped by libertarians who wanted to make a CP generating machine before the venture capitalist money ran out and it makes way too much sense.

Graphics cards. This is all just an overcapacity in graphics card manufacturing.

It started with crypto mining. It drove up demand and chip producers were happy to scale up production to meet the new market. Today, crypto isn't the growth market it was, so that capacity had to go somewhere. Lo and behold! What a coincidence, these LLMs could do with a whole lot of parallel calculations to speed up the training! So NVIDIA went from selling new cards to crypto startups, to selling new cards to OpenAI, Microsoft, and Google.
