One thing I think is that such platforms are built to manipulate the user into staying with them. Having what feels to be ADHD, I can have several different interests at once, and if they're done online, it's always miserable to cycle through sites to check one or two things, and so the interest to check such smaller platforms starts waning.
One thing I have found that helps mitigate the problem is aggregation systems, like RSS readers, Grayjay, NewPipe and the sort.
Maybe tools like those would be a start? Several of Youtube's alternatives support RSS and are supported by either/both NewPipe and Grayjay (with some overlap and plans to expand from each).
Also if the user is bent on ditching Youtube completely, but doesn't want to make a hard cut, doing a transition instead, Youtube also has RSS and integration to both players.
