For this Sunday Kino Night, first up is The Man Who Copied (2003), a Brazilian rom-com about a mwn who becomes infatuated with the lady who lives next door, and decides to impress her by going to her shop with counterfeit money and buying expensive items. As his plans escalate, he starts printing more and more money, and the whole scheme starts going off the rails. Hilarity ensues, and some drama, too. Director Jorge Furtado also did the movie-making mockumentary Basic Sanitation: The Movie (2007), which we previously watched; this is the one of the highest-rated Brazilian films on Letterboxd, so let’s give it a whirl.

After that is Nightmare Alley (1947), one of the classics of the film-noir genre. An unemployed drifter finds work in a travelling carnival, and gradually becomes more and more involved in the intrigue between the various eccentric carnies. He learns from them to become a fake mind-reader himself and using his bogus abilities to manipulate others to his own ends. What happens when his lies start to backfire? I guess we’ll find out. Director Edmund Goulding is otherwise best-known for the Best Picture Oscar winner Grand Hotel 91932); we have not watched any of his films, and this is generally considered his magnum opus, so it's a good place to start.
