Not going around assuming stuff about people is sorta just basic good manners. It's 2025 my friend. You put youself in some pretty interesting company by demanding to be allowed to assume stuff about people. Smdh.

If someone is going to incorrectly assume I'm an American I'd prefer the term Yank. It sounds better. But iiwii

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 6 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

"usian" is usually more fitting

calling themselves american and not being able to call myself american is what strains me. i tought you were against us-centrism...

I'm against that in general and against US defaultism more specifically, which is assuming everyone is American. I just think the particular term is strained. Yank is much better for example

usian is fine. it even sounds similar to what we call them in my country.

I just think it's a bit strained, it sounds clunky

not to me, maybe to english speakers. i don't mind either way. ๐Ÿ˜‰

[-] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz -1 points 8 months ago

I'm not a native English speaker, if that's what you mean

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 3 points 8 months ago

so why are you bothered with it if you are not a native speaker, nor usian?

[-] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz -1 points 8 months ago

Wouldn't you be bothered if I incorrectly assumer you were a Yank?

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 2 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

wait a second. so you are bothered by being called usian for having usian opinions, but every single other form of us-centrism is ok? sounds a bit performative.

it's like its what you want to be, just not called out on it.

[-] RaivoKulli@sopuli.xyz 0 points 8 months ago

Wouldn't someone making that assumption bother you?

[-] umbrella@lemmy.ml 2 points 8 months ago

sure but like. it's empty when all you care about is not being called usian.
