Tankie comes from when Soviet tanks rolled into Czechoslovakia in -68 IIRC. It was a brutal power move by the Soviet Union to squeeze the freedom out of people there who didn't want to live under the boot of Russia (which was the cornerstone of the Soviet Union).
People thinking this was not only okay but a good thing got named "Tankies" and today we use that for people being pro authoritarian communism.
Around here they dream up magic communist stuff and rewrites history a lot. So basically "not good people" IMO.
It was actually the Hungarian counter-revolution of 1956, not the Czech counter-revolution of '68. The '56 counter-revolt was legitimately a fascist revolt, led by nationalists that let Nazis out of prisons and sent them towards Jewish people and communist officials, lynching them and marking their doors. The Triumph of Evil goes over that, IIRC, plus the Hungarian nationalists were trained and backed by the CIA and MI6:
As for Prague Spring, it was also a CIA-backed counter-revolt. Sam Marcy writes about this in Czechoslovakia in 1968: The Class Character of the Events, Dubcek wanted to pivot to the IMF and world bank, establish full capitalism, and sell out the working class.
These were necessary interventions in the grand scheme of things, and were deliberately provoked by the west, the CIA and MI6 especially. It was not about "escaping the Russian boot," and for someone accusing communists of rewriting history it's odd that you even got the timeline of the origin of the term "tankies" wrong, let alone your interpretation of events.
