I wonder if this takes place outside of the US in a country with a drinking age of 18, or if anon somehow managed to become an alcoholic while not of legal drinking age.

Fake IDs are a whole industry in the US. I don't think I personally knew anyone with one, but it was certainly a thing.

Also older siblings or friends.

I don't think it's particularly hard to get alcohol underage in most of the US. In New Jersey you can drink underage as long as you're in a "private location" and there's a relative who's at least 21 present.
