Right? Pippin and Merry found his stash later on, don't recall if that is just in the extended movies though.
It was in the books, at any rate.
They were bros and gave what was left back to him when they encountered him again, even though he certainly didn't deserve it.
Meriadoc and Peregrine were indeed brethren of the highest calibre, but they knew that generosity would sting all the more and we should commend them their barbs.
Yeah that was one of those gems that makes the extended editions the definitive ones. :D
