Small community, but I figured I'd ask anyways. I may be moving to Hamilton soon for work -- I've never lived or visited the area before. The furthest North I've been, excluding a plane trip to Montreal, was London.

What do I have to look forward to? Or not look forward to. I've heard the rent situation is something crazy.

You have to love a city with its warts and all to like Hamilton. The rent is heinous. I love it here, it's my adopted hometown, but there are difficult parts because of the unhoused people, the addiction, and just a lot of crumbling shitty buildings.

The surrounding suburbs (Ancaster, Dundas, Stoney Creek), the west end and the mountain are all very well appointed by and large with lovely homes and well off neighbours. But it's also like living in the desert. I want to be in the thick of it all, good and bad, right downtown, even among all the problems the unhoused folks can cause. (Unfortunately it's just a really difficult problem for individuals to solve, and the government here sure doesn't care beyond giving them some shacks from Temu, and the rest is largely dependent on volunteers). You have to decide if you want to dive in with both feet or live on the edge. Nothing wrong with either, but I want to live in community with everyone, even when they are hard to love and help.

Unfortunately I'm going to be in the boat of renting a room and needing to live on the cheap! So I might not get a choice for where I live. I think at best I want to be within range of the bus routes, but I do have a reliable car so it is not the end of the world if I don't. Any locations you'd recommend to absolutely avoid? I've been exploring the city a lot through google maps, and I'll be honest it looks really safe and nice.

Hamilton would be my first time living in a city above 200k population, so it is a little scary but I'm more excited than scared. I'm not entirely sure what to expect living in such a larger city, or if it'll be a lot more mundane than I'd expect. As far as things to do, I'm a bit overwhelmed by choice. It feels like there is a lifetime of recreational stuff to be had here.
