Would it though? I don't see what permanent harm it can do, except for physical damage by the attraction. But so can the ground.
Electricity is actually nothing more than magnetic fields. The idea we have about electrons flying through a tube is not really accurate.
Most magnets won't do much unless your device uses some sort of Hard Disk Drive. But powerful magnets (the ones he used could carry 500KG, and he used 8 in total) could definitely disrupt some electric traffic, allowing it to create errors.
Doubt it would do permanent damage, unless he was actively using his phone for a long time right next to one of those magnets, but better safe than sorry.
