Is it safe to ride this past someone with a pacemaker?

[-] deacon@lemmy.world 18 points 2 days ago

Having watched the video, which is great, this bike is not safe for anything practical.

[-] finitebanjo@piefed.world 23 points 2 days ago

According to the video it would destroy his phone in proximity, so no.

[-] Decq@lemmy.world 0 points 1 day ago

Would it though? I don't see what permanent harm it can do, except for physical damage by the attraction. But so can the ground.

Electricity is actually nothing more than magnetic fields. The idea we have about electrons flying through a tube is not really accurate.

Most magnets won't do much unless your device uses some sort of Hard Disk Drive. But powerful magnets (the ones he used could carry 500KG, and he used 8 in total) could definitely disrupt some electric traffic, allowing it to create errors.

Doubt it would do permanent damage, unless he was actively using his phone for a long time right next to one of those magnets, but better safe than sorry.

It's a Colin Furze project. You only needed those first three words to get your answer!

Intentionally?

[-] limelight79@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

This is pretty cool. I love the crazy idea and that he could execute it well.

[-] alteredEnvoy@sopuli.xyz 5 points 1 day ago

Does no one notice the bike does not have any torsional strength whatsoever?

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 9 points 1 day ago

No one watches Furze for good ideas, he's just hilarious to watch fucking around. I would love to see an interview with his neighbors.

He explicitly calls it out as a problem (among other things) so... No?

It's just a bit of fun

[-] ozymandias@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 1 day ago

that’s why he used tapered bearings…

Tapered roller bearings (TRBs) are *versatile bearings with angled rollers and races, designed to handle heavy combined radial (sideways) and axial (thrust) loads

That's smart! But I think it is only keeping the joint smooth when there is a twisting torque? It doesn't really help with the torsional stiffness

Damping. I think Dampening is when you add moisture.

[-] 5wim@slrpnk.net 9 points 1 day ago

Damping is a process that reduces the amplitude or oscillation of a vibrating system over time.

Dampening can mean to make something slightly wet, or lessen the intensity of something

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 0 points 1 day ago

Dampening is when Americans try English.

It's not damping at all, only a spring effect.

Or lack thereof. It's also relying on the rigidity of the hinges to prevent twisting of the frame.

Fun til you fuck up your phone dropping it off your handlebars in to the magnet

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 5 points 2 days ago

Does it generate power because that would make it pretty cool?

[-] Honytawk@feddit.nl 2 points 1 day ago

It does!

If you made a giant coil and drove around it a bunch of times really fast, you would generate electricity.

[-] JillyB@beehaw.org 1 points 1 day ago

You guys are gunna freak out when you find out about dynamo hubs.

[-] Lucidlethargy@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 day ago

Imagine crashing and your finger goes in between that front suspension.

They need to put a guard on that thing.

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 day ago

It's far from the most dangerous thing he's built and ridden.

[-] djdarren@piefed.social 3 points 1 day ago

How long until he straps a jet engine to it?

[-] kent_eh@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago

That's the next video!

[-] SaveTheTuaHawk@lemmy.ca 1 points 1 day ago

Imagine crashing and your penis goes in between that front suspension.

[-] Honytawk@feddit.nl 2 points 1 day ago

The magnets are repelling each other.
