Join the lemmy.ml boycott today and help foster a better Lemmy-verse! No more posts, comments (except to counter their propaganda ofc!) or upvotes on any comms on the Lemmy.ml instance! To make this easy you can do an instance block at Settings > Block Tab > Scroll to bottom > Input "lemmy.ml" and apply

And consider donating to individual instances instead.

But it has come up that some major instances have a big concern in that if they defed from .ml dessalines will pull back support from them in retaliation

Any evidence of this? https://infosec.pub/instances defederates from Lemmy.ml and is doing just fine

[-] realitaetsverlust@piefed.zip 2 points 1 week ago

I think by "pulling support" he means that they will no longer support the instance if there are bugs or problems occurring. If you're technically savvy enough, you can probably get by without their support.

The Threadiverse Admin group has all the admins of the biggest instances , that's probably more than enough to troubleshoot any issue

Also if you're experiencing a but in the software itself, there are high chances that it's there for everyone, so Lemmy devs will probably want to know about it

I don't really consider infosec.pub to be a "major" instance, it's only at ~300 MAUs iirc, by "major" I'm thinking .world or SJW or blahaj

In any case, I'm almost positive I've seen it mentioned publicly in one of those big threads, maybe the donation ones a few months back. It was also told to me point blank by an admin of one of said major instances in a DM, but I am unsure how or even if I can release that considering it was told to me in private

Here is an example of both Dessalines and Nutomic helping troubleshooting Lemmy.cafe , which defederates from .ml

https://github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/5112

[-] cm0002@lemmy.zip 2 points 1 week ago

So there are a few possible reasons I can see with this

  1. The fear is truly unfounded
  2. The fear is founded, but .cafe being so small, he doesn't care to lend a hand and can use it for examples should this fear conversation become more serious. Dessalines is a lot of things, but he's not dumb
  3. The fear is founded, but because it's an issue that could potentially affect any instance large or small they decided to deal with it. Vs say if .world decided to defederate and then ran into an issue that mostly just affected them because of their size, maybe they'll "give the run around" instead or ignore the issue until it affects an instance they care about

So it doesn't change anything in any of the 3 scenarios, until the last one, and even then there's still no documented evidence of the Lemmy devs not helping ever happening?

[-] goat@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 week ago

What truly matters is that major instances have this fear to begin with, not whether or not it will happen.

[-] Blaze@lazysoci.al 2 points 6 days ago

Then why don't those admins switch to Piefed if that's a fear? It's been around for a while now, and it works as well as Lemmy.

While we are talking, why haven't you switched to a Piefed account yourself?

[-] goat@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago

Probably because it's not easy to transfer entire instances? I don't know dude.

I don't care to switch. Lemmy is dead

[-] Blaze@lazysoci.al 3 points 1 week ago

If such comment was made it would have probably created a lot of dedicated posts

If an admin of any instance got threatened that way they should probably release the evidence as this would probably encourage people to move to Piefed.

[-] cm0002@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

Sorry if I phrased it weirdly, I didn't mean to imply that threats had been made (which I mean, dessalines is smarter than that, because like you said it would blow the Lemmy-verse up if he actually made a threat), but rather it's a fear that's out there.

But like I said, I have confirmation of that fear in a DM from a major instance admin. Whether or not that fear is founded and justified or not, is up for debate. But it exists and it's a factor in the decision making process

[-] Blaze@lazysoci.al 2 points 6 days ago

Then why doesn't that admin switch their instance to Piefed? It's been stable for a while now

What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post, rather than engaging in unrelated arguments.

Brigading — If you're here because this community was linked in another thread, please refrain from voting, commenting or manipulating the post in any way, this includes alt accounts. All votes are public, and if you are found to be brigading, you will be permanently banned.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.
