ELI5 Why is RAM just now getting so expensive? (lemmy.world)

I know the main cause is AI but why now, why was there not this demand at the same time as when GPU prices started to sky rocket?

Also I dont see why AI needs RAM like VRAM I get it but why RAM?

It doesn't need RAM...

But the people who make RAM, are switching to what AI wants instead.

Crucial was one of the biggest names in RAM for decades... They just closed down so the parent company can make AI memory instead. Then of course it uses the same resources too.
