Nah, it's for the same reason they never went to a jungle world.

Back in the day they just shot everything in the desert outside of LA. It's the whole reason westerns were a thing in the first place, free setting.

So there was a bunch of props and sets from the studio, and Star Trek could do it for free.

I mean, wasn't even MASH in the desert for some reason?

Yeah, the truth is it's not that hard to find the right boxes to check as metrics that you can find any result you want.

Which is obviously what they did, they couldn't even stop it with a 54 age cap (who the fuck retires at 55?) they had to raise the minimum to 25, well after normal college grad age.

Even without getting into the organization and funding, anyone that actually learned about stats in a real stats class can you tell you it's being done to generate the results the funders want.

We really need to start teaching statistical analysis in highschool. I can't remember the last time I needed something past algebra, but stats comes up all the fucking time, and almost no one really knows the basics.

It's not even that complicated, but admittedly I had an amazing professor and took a couple courses.

It's the same thing Brazil did.

He's rich enough that he's kind of a parent corporation by himself, so:

X was previously accused of violating the Digital Services Act (DSA), which could result in fines of up to 6 percent of total worldwide annual turnover. That fine would be levied on the "provider" of X, which could be defined to include other Musk-led firms.

But yeah, American law has been limited so the buck stops at the company which declares bankruptcy and the money starts a new company.

Not everyone else system is as shitty

Technically step one was her saying for months that she wouldn't have done anything different...

But since all the moves right comes with hits in the polls, she's doing a 180

The Harris campaign, for its part, has been aware of the need to clean up Harris’ answers last week when she was asked what she would do differently than Biden, if elected, and what kind of changes she would make to her administration.

She's literally the only option we have, I just wish she was a better option so I'd feel more comfortable about stopping trump.

Also, bullshit on this:

“Every president has to cut their own path. That’s what I did. I was loyal to Barack Obama, but I cut my own path as president,” Biden said. “She’s been loyal so far, but she’s gonna cut her own path.”

Biden publicly undermined Obama when he threatened to withhold aid to Israel due to their treatment of Palestinians, and Biden would tell anyone that would listen it was a bad move. Something that just isn't done, and definitely doesn't fit in "loyal".

He has no higher loyalty than Israel.

Edit:

I mean, that's the excuse for Kamala currently not speaking out on Biden's strategy with Israel...

If someone thinks what Biden did as VP was "loyal" then they can't use Kamala being VP as a shield for why she won't call out Biden's handling of the situation.

There literally couldn't be a more direct comparison.

They can't defend both Biden and Kamala in this instance.

While there are multiple ways to measure employment, the best single measure is the percentage of the adult population with a job, known as the employment-to-population ratio (EPOP). However, with a growing portion of the adult population becoming retirees, this measure is confounded by demographic trends over longer time periods. Many economists therefore focus on “prime-age EPOP,” or the percentage of people ages 25–54 with a job, as a way to account for the aging of the population. A more sophisticated method is to adjust for both age and sex. Adjusting for age accounts not only for the increase in retirees but also the aging within the 25–54 bracket. Adjusting for sex is necessary to analyze previous decades, when a much smaller percentage of working-age women were in the workforce. After adjusting for age and sex, the percentage of the population that is working is roughly at its peak height in U.S. history. This is also true if one looks directly at prime-age EPOP.

If we stop using the metric we always used, and invent a new one that says things are great, then things are great!

What else do you need expect from a Podesta organization that claims to be progressive?

The whole point of it is to convince people neoliberals are just as effective as progressives could be.

That's why it's funded by billionaires and opposed healthcare reform and other things billionaires don't want.

Just like with rightwing "think tanks" don't just pay attention to the name or blindly believe what someone has chosen for a label.

I think this is a uniquely American problem due to our low regulations and ridiculous drug laws.

But for the most part things need to be explicitly outlawed, and everything else is fair game to be sold for human consumption as a "supplement".

We went thru it with "Spice" and your country may have as well. They used analogs to THC, and at first it really felt like weed. But we'd outlaw the current one, and the company had the next one already in production. Stores/gas stations would literally have the next generation in the back so they could rotate the day the current one was outlawed.

Like, I remember back in the day when I played sports, lots of guys wouldn't take a weightlifting supplement that had been on the market more than two years... Because anything "good" would have been taken off the market by then.

It's just a revolving door where no one really knows what's anything.

So even tho this is and opioid, no one checked if it was safe first, and when it's outlawed it'll be tweaked just enough to be something new. And that "new" version will have more negatives and less positives, but if you're hooked on the old kind, you're gonna use the new kind over nothing. Or maybe move to legit black market.

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 44 points 10 hours ago

To be fair, "gas station heroin" is a pretty apt description.

And the way it's sold, people get hooked before they realize what's going.

It's crazy that's stuff legal but cannabis isn't.

I mean, this dude is likely a giant asshole, and fuck him.

But this stuff fucks over a lot of lives of people with no idea what they're taking.

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 4 points 10 hours ago

I might have seen a headline or something about that.

But I guess 2018 wasn't a presidential year, and that's why Beto was such a big story

https://elections2024.thehill.com/texas/texas-senate-cruz-allred/

Cruz has been slightly pulling a head, but 6% in Texas still ain't bad. Allred might still get it, a former NFL linebacker is right up Texas's alley

Sinwar was born in 1962 in Gaza’s Khan Younis refugee camp to a family that was among hundreds of thousands of Palestinians driven from what is now Israel during the 1948 war surrounding its creation.

And the next generation will be born to survivors of this.

People raised in situations like this don't often grow up into peaceful people, because they're not raised in a peaceful environment.

That's why (as many jokes were made about it) America switched to "hearts and minds" half a century ago.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hearts_and_Minds_(Vietnam_War)

If you try to crush a population for obedience, you can't ever take the boot off, and they'll always try to push you off. You have to genuinely look out for their best interests and over time win them over.

And that would take a very long time for Israel to convince their neighbors, but it's the only way for a permanent solution besides Israel killing all of their neighbors, which (and I shouldn't have to say this) is not an acceptable solution.

You can't ask the victim to "be the bigger person" if they do it first, they're still under the boot and the boot won't move.

That's literally why the phrase is "be the bigger person" because part of it involves the stronger person being the one who wants peace.

Texas is very winnable if we put the effort in, and even just the effort would force Republicans to focus there over existing battlegrounds.

If Beto hadn't run a gun control focused campaign he probably would have won.

Kind of surprised I haven't heard about the current challenger yet:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colin_Allred

His 40 time was a little slow, but a 9'7" broad jump would probably be top five in the Senate.

He's not perfect, but just from that Wikipedia he's obviously better than Ted Cruz

This ain't new...

"No child left behind" meant kids didn't have to learn anything because they couldnt/wouldn't be held back.

No matter what happens, you get advanced to the next grade, and after 12 years they hand you a meaningless piece of paper.

Which is a part that doesn't get touched on enough, it probably had a large effect on "degree inflation" because it made a highschool diploma mean absolutely nothing, even if you did well. Which lead to everyone going to college and all the issues with that.

Like, we definitely need to stop more damage from being done.

I just want to fix the shit Republicans broke 20 some years ago too.

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 32 points 13 hours ago

Sounded ridiculous like it was just random idiots.

But it's a lot more dangerous and more likely than that:

Former White House adviser Stephen Miller said enforcement will be managed by red state National Guard troops that the Trump administration would deputize as immigration enforcement officers, according to the report.

He could and would 100% do that, Govenors wouldn't fight it, and even if they did, the SC would side with trump.

They really should have said "National guard" in the headline instead of "MAGA force".

India leads the world in generating plastic pollution, producing 10.2 million tons a year (9.3 million metric tons), far more than double the next big-polluting nations, Nigeria and Indonesia. China, often villainized for pollution, ranks fourth but is making tremendous strides in reducing waste, Velis said. Other top plastic polluters are Pakistan, Bangladesh, Russia and Brazil. Those eight nations are responsible for more than half of the globe’s plastic pollution, according to the study’s data.

The United States ranks 90th in plastic pollution with more than 52,500 tons (47,600 metric tons) and the United Kingdom ranks 135th with nearly 5,100 tons (4,600 metric tons), according to the study.

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration last week set a hearing date to take comment on the proposed historic change in federal drug policy for Dec. 2.

The hearing date means a final decision could well come in the next administration. While it’s possible it could precede the end of President Joe Biden’s term, issuing it before Inauguration Day “would be pretty expedited,” said cannabis lawyer Brian Vicente.
