It doesn't matter

Their viewers literally do not care about the truth.

Their entire belief system would be unraveled in minutes if they took the time to look at any original sources.

The "do your own research" crowd isn't smart enough, or isn't inclined to do even the slightest bit of actual research.

They were never equipped to by the American education system.

[-] LapGoat@pawb.social 14 points 1 year ago

yeah sure, but as a person who's entire education was neglectful parents throwing a textbook in front of me and basically leaving me unsupervised, its kinda on them.

we have the entirety of human knowledge in our pockets and ive met conservatives who think the scps they see on tiktok exist and the government covers it up.

Congratulations 🍾 You have successfully displayed survival bias on the internet. Please accept your prize 🏆 before exiting.

[-] LapGoat@pawb.social 0 points 1 year ago

ehhh not really, as I didnt go through the american education system. Im more like a plane that didnt see combat that returned to base with no bullet holes, so officers concluded that everything is borked and a single bullet will down a plane.

But what I am saying is that ehhhh shits dumb and people should be less dumb, and they really have no excuse for continuing to be dumb like this.

by all means, we should improve society somewhat, including the american education system. If the american education system was better, Id have likely been allowed to go to public school and would thus have better social skills, allowing me to party and live up being a young twink rather than chat with folks on a budding social media site.

Fuckin boomers thinking everyone needs a goddamn ribbon

If one person fails at something, maybe it is on them. We don’t want to rush into some kind of moral judgment about them deserving the consequences because they may have issues with their personal history, cognitive abilities, or relationships that led to the failure, but it’s still individual characteristics (even if it’s not their fault, per se).

If hundreds of thousands to millions of people are failing in the same way, we’re looking at a systemic problem rather than a personal one, and bootstraps aren’t the answer. Don’t think about it like someone who made it and is justifiably proud of what they did. Think about it like a statistician. How many people in similar circumstances to yours made it without falling into religious fundamentalism, conservative politics, or even substance abuse and being stuck wherever their birth landed them? I bet it’s a pretty high percentage, even if we only count the ones whose parents threw them a textbook.

Systemic problems require systemic solutions. We have a lot to get through before we can get there, but it’s still easier to fix if the problems are properly diagnosed - and demonstrably the existence of the internet and smartphones is not solving it.

yes, however:

being a victim of a systemic problem doesnt really justify being a racist and homophobic bigot that clings to a false narrative in spite of overwhelming evidence.

and when a group of people have decided to be hateful to me because of shoddy reasons, ive decided I can say whatever I like about them.

[-] Tavarin@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 year ago

You got a textbook, most of these people never did.

[-] LapGoat@pawb.social 2 points 1 year ago

i hear you but we have the internet widely available.

Im not arguing that the american education system is adequate, im just saying that at some point, people have a responsibility to not follow belief systems that can be disproven with a few hours of research.

it requires a lot of head in sand to be a modern fundie repub

[-] Tavarin@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 year ago

The internet on its own is not a solution given anyone can make a website and say whatever they want on it.

I was arguing with a guy here on Lemmy who though nationalpriorities.com was a more reliable source of information than Wikipedia.

People need to be taught how to use the internet, how to find sources for the information and filter out lies and falsehoods. That takes a good education, which many people lack.

a lot of people dont trust the school system or modern research and studies, its quite sad and i've no clue how to counteract that.

people who think school is liberal brainwashing arent going to listen to school when it teaches how to critical think.

Idk, school should get more funding, but again i think its that guys fault for thinking that.

dont get me wrong, that guy should also get the resources they need, but like...cmon...

Bingo! A huge portion of the country are taught to: not question authority, study to the tests, and not critically think about things.

[-] TokenBoomer@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

The state will never give you the tools to overthrow it.

[-] Red_October@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Worse than that, they will actively reject the truth when it's inconvenient to them. They will choose to believe her deceptive edits are somehow more true than actual reality, even if they flat out know it was deceptively edited.

[-] TruTollTroll@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

What they mean when they say do you own research, they mean listen to their newscasters only and just trust them.. because they did the research and if you your self did it, it would be biased.... so just trust them bro. Crazy lunatics...
