"The republicans of 10-20 years ago are today's democrats" has been true for like 60 years now.
Modern democrats are even rehabilating GW Bush, who killed a million innocent people in Iraq just a few years ago. The democrats of a few years from now will be rehabilitating Trump when there's a new "bad cop" they need to play "good cop" against.
I remember how disappointed centrists were that GWB didn't endorse harris after all they did to bring the party in line with his policies.
