MODERATORS
Greenland was an unpopular issue, even among conservatives and Republicans. The past year has not gone well for the GOP and this was yet another thing hurting their midterm chances for 2026.
The EU agreed to a framework for a deal that gives the US nothing it doesn't already have. Trump is either truly convinced he's come out on top and sees it as a win, or is using it as an excuse to back away from it while declaring victory to his base.
But the damage is done and will be done for a long time to come. We have the same benefits that always existed from treaties between the two nations, but now with a needlessly difficult and contentious diplomatic relationship. Such a monumentally stupid thing adding to the ever growing list of monumentally stupid things the US is doing.
To add to this correct answer, NATO allies were sending military assets to Greenland. Not even trump can destroy THAT Imperialist dragon.
Trump, if nothing else, knows how to read the room. The problem is that he doesn't govern alone. He can say he's pulling ICE agents out of Minnesota because it's cratering his popularity, but nobody in his own party takes that seriously. What makes Greenland unique is that it would take Trump's approval to launch an invasion, and Trump knows what it would do to his popularity.
To be absolutely clear this isn't an defence of Trump in any way. It's just "he knows how to read the room" and nothing else.
