I definitely wouldn't recommend an astronomy laser, which are far more powerful than laser pointers.
Though if you do come across powerful lasers in the wild, it's best to have eye protection that filters out the relevant frequency. Even the partial reflection bouncing off 90% transparent glass could cause retina damage.
The sparrow-sized ones can probably be stopped with the appropriate color of tinted plastic foil from an arts and crafts store, though if you want to be sure get laser goggles that are appropriate for your local species.
