Having seen what americans serve their children in school I can only conclude that this is just part of traditional americans cuisine.
It has more to do with the fact that the schools, the military, and the prisons literally all go through the exact same food mega-conglerate.
There isn't enough grease or corn here for this to be traditional American cuisine.
