I haven't watched it but my understanding is that the demons in Frieren are evil by virtue of their very nature - incapable of being good. This manifests as even their children being valid targets. That idea is extremely core to fascism - some people are just inherently evil, by virtue of ancestry, and the fascists must do the "hard thing" and wipe them out.
I'm not saying they're not ignoring plenty of stuff to get to their reading but it's hardly surprising, surely.
