Why are news sites so shit these days? Ran out of memory trying to load all the bloat

an adblocker goes a long way
They still perform like shit even with uBlock on, and turning off JS makes most sites unusable
firefox's reading mode is a godsend in that respect, for really old computers.
Gotta admit, I've never tried that out. Thanks for the tip!
