So I know the theory of shaving with the grain:

But... it doesn't work, right? Against the grain is the only way to get a smooth shave... surely?

To get a clean shave or a precision shave, I go against the grain. If I'm just trimming, I'll go with the grain.

Disclaimer: I use clippers.
