I realized I haven't gamed with arcade-type joysticks for a long time and kind of missed them.
It seems to me gamepads are way more popular than large joysticks nowadays, when joysticks used to be a popular gaming accessory.
Is it because they take up too much space?
Is it because they lack the modern gamepad features (analog sticks / triggers / buttons, side / back buttons)?
Do you still use joysticks for gaming, and what kind of games do you play with them? What do you like about them?
I'd like to hear your thoughts.
Thanks for all the replies, sorry I didn't reply to every one but I read them all, keep them coming please!
I am glad to hear joysticks are still popular in some circles.
Some more random thoughts:
I mostly play 4X games or other casual games nowadays where mouse and keyboard suffices or is better suited. The most recent time I spent significant time with a gamepad is Zelda OoT on an emulator. I can probably play that with a joystick I think, but some of its mini-game might need finer control with an analog stick.
Aside from fighting games, I can imagine playing 2D shooters with a joystick. Metroidvania games too, but some of them have functions assigned to so many buttons I'm not sure a joystick has enough.
