Why "airborne early warning aircraft"? Isn't it already implied that an aircraft will be airborne?

Airborne Early Warning and Control is a specific type of thing, so an AEW aircraft is a particular type of aircraft.

I mean, there's no type of airborne warning system that isn't on an aircraft.

We're not launching projectile based warning systems, or ones that float on unguided balloons.

This feels more like military people insisting on using jargon and acronyms and not actually thinking about the underlying terms.
