”Without these people, it would be painfully obvious how unfunny I really am.” - John Oliver, probably

[-] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 27 points 1 year ago

Whatever. I've seen him do stand-up and I think he's funny, but it's not like Jon Stewart or Stephen Colbert or Conan O'Brien write/wrote all or even most of their own material.

[-] MooseBoys@lemmy.world 57 points 1 year ago

It’s not meant as an insult - this kind of self-deprecation sounds exactly like something he would say.

[-] fouloleron@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Yes, because English.

[-] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca 5 points 1 year ago

Yeah I got the tone right away. It is something John Oliver would say. And there is some truth to it. I loved the Daniel O'Brien Cracked videos (like After Hours) and he works for John Oliver now. There's some bits Oliver does that's just so Daniel O'Brien.

This one in particular: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hk011WMM7t0

It's kinda trippy to hear John Oliver saying stuff that's 100% a classic Daniel O'Brien Cracked video.

I was with you because of the "/s" missing.

[-] three@lemm.ee 0 points 1 year ago

"/s" has become a crutch for people lacking critical thinking and reading comprehension skills.

[-] Darthjaffacake@lemmy.world 7 points 1 year ago

What's wrong with crutches? Lots of people need them

[-] Franzia@lemmy.blahaj.zone 6 points 1 year ago

Pretty sure Jon Stewart was funny because of John Oliver!

[-] madcaesar@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I don't think of Jon as all that funny. I listen to him for his honest and intelligent takes. He could be the least funny person in the world and I'd still listen to him.

HIGNFY aren't returning my calls.

[-] phoenixz@lemmy.ca 6 points 1 year ago

Are you sure that's not a quote? I can hear him say it.
