I feel the same but I buy shit on Steam all the time. Probably because I can still play my old shit on there and I don't risk having to buy every indie game several times because it isn't compatible with the latest console.
Also, the pricing on console stores are ridiculous..
At least Steam has repeatedly said that they have "measures" in place to make sure their customers can still access the game they bought if Steam had to shut down. They didn't go into details though, so finger crossed.
Also Valve supports Linux gaming and creates quite non-standard products like the Steam Controller, Link, Deck (which is awesome!), HTC Vive, ..
