I wondered this as well, looks like automatic seatbelts were a thing in the late 80’s - early 90’s

There are lap belts, you can see the metal part if you look closely at the passenger seat. They retract when not in use.

Because of their unique design people would often not wear them though which was really bad for car accidents. Wouldn’t recommend it.
