Do you play any games on your smartphone? I'm looking for single player ones to kill some time when waiting for the bus. Ideally they should work without an internet connection, so I can disable network access for that app and play without ads.

I'm currently playing Words of Wonder, but it gets repetitive after a while.

It's tough to find good ones. I'm sure you already know Pixel Dungeon. There's also:

Caves (a challenging traditional roguelike)
Stick Ranger (kind of a weird one, and a lot of grinding for xp)
Rusted Warfare (an RTS game)
Dungeons of Dreadrock (decent puzzle game)

I'm not 100% sure how any of these act in airplane mode though. I think I paid for Rusted Warfare, but there was a demo.
