TikTok working with Kenyan government to ban LGBTQ+ content in the country
(www.lgbtqnation.com)
This is a most excellent place for technology news and articles.
Most of us are here because of us refusing to use unethical platforms. That's the best thing about Lemmy, we have standards.
Not that (I think most Lemmy users probably do have YouTube and I KNOW a lot have Tumblr,) I just don't think TikTok's content appeals to the average Lemmy user.
For me it's not the short video format only.
Each time I installed TikTok (for whatever reason or event on a specific channel), I was met with a cringefest on the home screen. So bad I didn't even want to look further.
Also the app is a privacy nightmare and most like still is a phone spy, taking whatever is in the accessible phone memory and sending it.
Also due to the platform design, fake information looking as "real" and sensational is more pushed. So how would someone know it's fake, I don't know. Just reputable channels coming from. YouTube or whatever would be good enough.
Tiktok supports 10 minute videos. I see tons of very entertaining/educational videos.
How would you even know it's educational and real content?
Due to the platforms design, fake, sensational, and "real" looking content is more pushed than truly real/educational content.
Well if you're genuinely interested here's an account I enjoy a lot: https://www.tiktok.com/@redwoodsrising
I'm not sure of his exact title but he works for and talks about lots of redwood tree facts I didn't know I needed. He also educates about the local native people and their impact/contributions on the forest. Most of his videos are like 2-5 minutes. May sound short but I honestly get exhausted watching full length documentaries that often go for some kind of dramatic approach. I just wanna learn about cool stuff, I'm not usually in it for anything else.
Theresa also lots of people who work with/educate about different animals, actually funny comedy skits, and lots of niche shitposts for basically whatever you're into.
You gotta give it a little bit of time for the algorithm to curate to you but once it does it's actually really high quality content imo. At the very least it's nice seeing actual original content from people who have interesting passions/jobs versus people just linking articles/"TIL" style posts.
Entertaining and educational videos didn't exist online until tiktok.
I never said that but if you're looking for shorter form original content entertainment in video form I'd go to tiktok before YouTube or something.
Well you just had to search better lol.
YouTube is full of them before TikTok. Tho maybe not interesting in your domain.
YouTube is the only one I can't let go off, there are podcasts and creators that will forever be exclusive to that platform that I ashamedly do care about
Not only that, but Tiktok is for actual morons. You made a video? and posted it to the internet? WOW SUCH INNOVATION. NICE HAND DANCE.
Clearly you've never used TikTok. The algorithm is amazing.
