Paint over wood sealer on paddle?

A handmade home for woodworkers and admirers of woodworkers. Our community icon is a planter box made by @Captain Aggravated, the winner of our summer '24 woodworking contest. Congratulations!
You can experiment on a separate piece of wood with some stains and paints, but in my (albeit very amateur) experience filler is hard to color after the fact, especially if you've already oiled it.
My take is it's easiest to mix your own color match using colored fillers, fill, then seal. You want to color match the final finished/oiled wood, since the filler does not change color with finishing, unlike raw wood.
Thanks, I don’t mind if it’s a bit off, just closer than it is. I’m mostly worried about the paint degrading in salt water though
