From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).
Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.

It's really about what you want to do with your computer. Try to do something you would normally do on Windows in Linux. If you're already using an open source program to do it on Windows you will very likely find the same program on Linux.
If you want to play games they will likely not work well in a virtual environment.
Between WINE and proton most games work these days though... Sure if the game's not on steam it might take a couple extra steps, but more often than not those extra steps are just adding it as a non steam game and assigning a proton version in properties in the GUI and it works
Yes, but that won't work in a virtual environment that doesn't have access to the GPU. OP said they were using Virtual Box to trial Linux.
