Very different takes on what it means to do a Kamen Rider story, imo. But they shared the urge to really lean on the body horror and gore tho. Even accounting for the fact that Black Sun has more hours to fill, Shin Kamen Rider has even more sparse world building details than Shin Ultraman. (Also Black Sun was rebooting Black, which I grew up with so I can also have a basis for comparison; Shin is doing a film treatment of the 1971 original, so the specific canon to that series I have very little awareness of)
And how does it compare to The First? That one is so good!
Ooo haven't seen that one... Gotta hunt that one down
You should! Then there's The Next sequel, not as good but still awesome
Okay I read some reviews and summaries - Shin is definitely more avant garde, not as conventional. Parts of that I enjoyed but I personally have a low tolerance for exposition monologues if nothing else is happening on screen so those really took me out. And Ichimonji came in way too late in the film imo to earn the Double Riders payoff but also he should have come in earlier because his vibe was so much more fun and could've lightened up Hongo a lot sooner.
