Seeing how much they're paying for telecom fees I wonder if after they switch to not needing a phone number if that'll go down greatly.

I doubt number verification is going to change, they say they use it to filter out spam/bot accounts.

We need a reliable way to tell humans from bots without using government records.

Given those costs, you'd think they'd offer other ways to verify, like any other messaging platform, email, carrier pigeon, etc. They're just sending a code - without knowing the rest of the user info, no one else can use it.
