I'm going to do these periodically.

Title kinda says all.

I'll have my own reply later.

Special weekly question:

What do you like most about 2023's repertoire of video games?

Been playing through the Super Mario RPG remake. Really fun and charming, if a bit simple. One of the best and most faithful remakes I've ever seen. The music is amazing too, listen to this shit

I also recently played a game called A Short Hike. As the name implies it's a short, chill game where you explore an island, all done with this very charming Animal Crossing or Phantom Hourglass-esque aesthetic. Check it out if you get the chance.

I'm contemplating getting Fire Emblem Three Houses because I have a Fire Emblem itch lately. Not sure if I'd like the life Sim elements though. I also bought The Talos Principle on a whim while it was on sale and want to check it out soon.

As for 2023 in gaming... I don't really know because I didn't play many new games lol. Tears of the Kingdom was good but felt a bit like an enhanced BOTW.

Edit: oh shit I forgot Pizza Tower came out this year lol, that shit ruled

The life sim stuff really wrecks the pacing of Three Houses and Engage. Three Houses is still fantastic, but I'd rather play one of the GBA or SFC games whenever the Fire Emblem mood hits me.

Yeah that was my big gripe when it was first announced and why I didn't get it when it came out. Like I don't care for anime Harry Potter lol. But ive heard the story and actual battles are good. Does it drag during the first run or only on repeat playthroughs?

I played Echoes for the first time earlier this year and loved it despite some of its quirks and deviations from the formula. Probably the best presentation in the series too imo. I wouldn't mind if other JP-only games got the same treatment.

It's fine on the first run, but drags on subsequent runs. It doesn't help that the first half of the game is identical for each of the 4 routes. The units are also extremely customizable, in a way that they feel more like Final Fantasy Tactics units instead of Fire Emblem. This is generally good, but I get choice paralysis pretty bad so it makes me hesitant on replays.

Echoes is fantastic, but sold like crap, unfortunately. I'd love a Genealogy of the Holy War with some QoL improvements, but I'm not holding my breath tbh. Luckily all of the Japan-only games have solid fan translations, and you can use emulator savestates/fast-forwards to get some of the QoL stuff the original releases need. I'd definitely recommend giving them a shot if you haven't played them already.

Yeah, I guess being a remake of a series black sheep on a system that was overshadowed by the release of the Switch wasn't gonna make it a hit on the level of Awakening or Fates. And yeah I do want to go back and check out Genealogy and stuff.
